Hindley and Heathcliff’s relationship is defined by violence and bullying each other. Even when they were young they displayed physical abuse against one another. Hindley was trying to get revenge on Heathcliff for taking his horse from him. When Nelly spotted the boys by the barn and described what happened, “Heathcliff had gone to loose the beast and shift it to his own stall; he was passing behind it, when Hindley finished his speech by knocking him under its feet…” (Bronte, 44) Hindley never stopped there to bully Heathcliff. As Heathcliff had no power over him, since Mr. Earnshaw died. Hindley would verbally bully Heathcliff too saying, “ Begone, you vagabond! What! You are attempting the coxcomb, are you? Wait till I get hold of those elegant locks-see if I won’t pull them a bit longer?” (Bronte, 61) This all happened when Hindley was in charge of not only Heathcliff, but the Heights as well. Soon Heathcliff took over as Hindley drank his sorrows away becoming weak. When Heathcliff wanted his revenge Nelly watched him as, “...he tore off the sleeve of Earnshaw’s coat, and bound up the wound with brutal roughness, spitting and cursing during the operation as energetically as he had kicked before.” (Bronte, 173) This really proves that whoever has the most power between the two will use it to bully the other. It goes to show bullying does not just stop in a week, it can sometimes be a lifelong problem. The problem of bullying leads to many suicides in teens, since they feel that there bully will never stop. Heathcliff and Hindley both exhibit behaviour of bullying at certain times. Both men at one point in the novel, had overpowered the other in their weakest time.
Throughout my whole childhood my brother has always been there for me. But at the same time he is my arch-nemesis. He would always bully me since he was taller and stronger than me. Before he was accepted to college, the way we bullied each other was the normal sibling fights. He was half way through a semester when he dropped out of college, and of course my parents were not impressed. This led to him taking his anger out on me. It is all because of him feeling like he had no power with my parents. It relates to Hindley and Heathcliff’s relationship, because of the fact it is between the both of us. Hindley took advantage of Heathcliff when they were young, like Blake did to me when we were young. Then Heathcliff gained more power when they got older and started to bully Hindley. When my brother went to college he lost all my parents respect giving me more power in the family, having my parents on my side. Therefore, I believe the motive for bullying is feeling powerless and wanting a sense of relief from their pain.
